Writing Excerpts

In 1980, when I was beginning my work for the visually impaired, I had a dream-like opportunity to study at a rehabilitation center for the blind in Chicago for a few months. After the training, God gave me a chance to tour the Niagara Falls which I have been cherishing to do since elementary school, and it was an emotional moment. Looking at Niagara Falls, I realized from deep inside the creator God’s amazing abilities. Although I could not see the waterfall with my own eyes, I was overwhelmed by the magnificent and mysterious sound of the water falling with a roar, and with that I could fully feel the majestic view of the waterfall. It was a mysterious sound that I have never heard before in my life.

I relied on the arm of the late Reverend Ji Gwan-sun to get close to the place where the water was falling. Then, spray of water splashed on my face and all over my body. As I approached closer, the sound of the waterfall completely filled my ears so that I could not even hear what the person next to me was saying. The stream was strong enough to shake the ground, and the scattered droplets were beautiful and mysterious. To my ears, it sounded like a primodial mystery shouting at God’s glory.

Niagara Falls is truly a beautiful place that I would like to visit and see again and again. I thought about how great it would be to live like that waterfall which supplies energy and happiness to the viewers, and provides inspiration each time without ever getting tired from it.

Niagara Falls descends day and night making a mysterious and magnificent sound. The waterfall itself is a non-stopping organism. Could people provide the same kind of inspiration day and night with good thoughts, living a good life? I do not know where all the water that pours from Niagara Falls goes, but I know that it flows without stopping. Could people live with the unwavering faith and heart like the Niagara Falls?

The sheer existence of the Niagara Falls is amazing. Just by looking at the falling body of water, a sense of joy and strength can flow naturally. Would not it be wonderful if a person can give joy and strength to one’s neighbors as often as possible? Niagara Falls is beautiful whether it is day or night. How nice would it be if people can shine on the world in a good and beautiful way like the sun during the day and moon at night?

So I named this book, “Life is like Niagara Falls,” from the inspiration that I received from the waterfall: “If people live like Niagara Falls, then the souls suffering from life will come to enjoy the happiness of the soul, the mind, and the body!”

This collection of essays was presented to the world in hopes of strengthening Christian co-workers, entrepreneurs, and the Korean people suffering from the coronavirus which abruptly came upon the humankind.

Only those who walk nonstop can reach the top and accomplish the goal. No matter how difficult things may be, I pray that we can rely on God to live faithfully today and to walk unceasingly towards tomorrow as reflected in the biblical passage from Psalm 46:1, 7 – “God is our refuge and strength, a very well proved help in trouble. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” I hope the readers and I can live this precious life, offered only once, for the glory of God by day or night, give joy to everyone, and become someone whom others would want to meet again and again.
