News Report

The Reverend Kim Sun-Tae, Director of Siloam Eye Hospital and the Executive Board Member of Siloam Social Welfare Foundation for the Blind, has recently published a collection of personal meditations, “Life Is like Niagara Falls” (Publishing House of PCK). The book, subtitled “Hopeful Meditations on the Four Seasons of Life,” contains his insights gained from the Niagara Falls, wisdom and retrospection of life, and testimony of faith in the form of essays and poems.

At the press conference on the 15th of April, Rev. Kim stated, “Although I could not properly see the famous Niagara Falls due to my visual handicap, I was overwhelmed by the magnificent and mysterious sound of water as if it was coming from the primordial times.” He continued, “I am confident that if I live like the Niagara Falls, then my soul, my heart, and my body will be happy. I sincerely hope that this book will offer hope and joy to those people suffering in life’s despair, and to help people to rejoice and be glad-hearted continuously, to pray without ceasing, and to give thanks in all circumstances.”

Rev. Kim lost his eyesight during the Korean Civil War when a bomb exploded. He had to live as a beggar for two and half years but in church he found God. After that, he went on to receive three doctorate’s degrees and became the director of Siloam Eye Hospital despite his blindness. He is now referred to as the icon of hope. Rev. Sung Gi-bok, the Chaplain at Siloam Eye Hospital, was present at the press conference. He stated, “Some people when they make a big decision will make it last about nine years but others will make it last longer. Rev. Kim is the latter. In his book, he speaks about hope that has led his life through philosophical thinking, theological investigation, and pastoral practice.”
